Farmrail’s
joint-venture affiliate in New York,
Finger
Lakes Railway Corp. (FGLK), operates a 132-mile cluster of lines
purchased in 1995 and 36 miles of associated operating rights.
Radiating from headquarters at Geneva, they provide connections with
the national railway network via CSX Transportation and Norfolk
Southern. FGLK handles a highly diversified list of commodities for
about four dozen customers,
including paper and pulpboard, industrial minerals, canned goods,
steel products, consumer salt and plastics.
FGLK's traffic base has grown
nearly three-fold since inception, the result of aggressive
marketing and improved physical condition. Two-carrier access makes
the Finger Lakes region attractive for rail-dependent manufacturing
and distribution.
FGLK is a founding member of “Empire Link,” a collaboration of 12
short lines connected by a Norfolk Southern corridor to create a
2,465-mile regional carload network in
New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This innovative
concept directly addresses the need for pricing and service to make
short-haul general merchandise traffic rail-competitive.
